Burnout & Emotional Exhaustion
Understanding Burnout
Burnout can develop when prolonged stress, pressure, or responsibility continues without adequate rest, support, or recovery. Over time, the constant effort to meet expectations can leave individuals feeling mentally, emotionally, and physically depleted.
Many people experiencing burnout describe feeling overwhelmed by responsibilities while also feeling disconnected from motivation or enjoyment. Tasks that once felt manageable may begin to feel heavy or difficult to initiate.
Burnout can occur in many areas of life, including demanding careers, caregiving roles, academic environments, or situations where individuals feel responsible for meeting the needs of others. It may also develop when personal boundaries become difficult to maintain or when people feel unable to step away from ongoing demands.
When burnout continues without space for restoration, individuals may begin to feel increasingly exhausted, discouraged, or detached from their work, relationships, or daily routines.
Experiences People May Notice
Individuals experiencing burnout may notice:
- persistent exhaustion or feeling emotionally drained
- difficulty finding motivation or energy for daily tasks
- feeling detached from work or responsibilities
- increased irritability or emotional sensitivity
- difficulty concentrating or making decisions
- feeling overwhelmed by expectations or demands
- loss of satisfaction or meaning in activities that once felt important
- a sense of being “stretched too thin” for too long
Burnout can sometimes develop gradually, making it difficult to recognize until the effects begin to impact daily functioning and overall well-being.
Therapy can provide space to step back from these patterns and explore what may be contributing to ongoing exhaustion.
Our Approach to Burnout Therapy
At Insight Therapy Centre, work related to burnout focuses on understanding the patterns and pressures that may be contributing to ongoing stress and emotional exhaustion.
Therapy may explore how expectations, responsibilities, boundaries, and personal coping patterns interact over time. Our clinicians may integrate reflective dialogue, somatic awareness, cognitive approaches, and relational exploration.
The goal of therapy is to support individuals in developing greater awareness of these patterns and exploring ways to restore balance, capacity, and emotional well-being.
Sessions are collaborative and adapted to each person’s experiences and circumstances.
