EMDR Therapy

“The past affects the present even without our being aware of it.”

What is EMDR Therapy?

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a psychotherapy approach that focuses on how past experiences can continue to influence present thoughts, emotions, and reactions.

Sometimes experiences are processed and integrated naturally over time. In other cases, certain memories may remain connected to strong emotional or physical responses, particularly when the experience was distressing or overwhelming.

EMDR therapy works with the way the brain processes information and memory. Through structured therapeutic procedures, individuals are guided in exploring memories, emotions, and beliefs while engaging in forms of bilateral stimulation such as eye movements or other alternating sensory input.

This process is designed to support the brain’s natural ability to process experiences and integrate them more adaptively.

Experiences EMDR Therapy May Support

EMDR therapy is often used in connection with experiences such as:

  • distress connected to past events
  • persistent emotional responses linked to certain memories
  • intrusive thoughts or reminders of difficult experiences
  • strong emotional reactions that feel difficult to understand
  • patterns that seem connected to earlier life experiences
  • feelings of being “stuck” despite insight or personal reflection
  • anxiety or distress connected to specific triggers

These experiences may vary from person to person, and therapy is always tailored to the individual’s circumstances.

Our Approach to EMDR Therapy

At Insight Therapy Centre, EMDR therapy is provided in a trauma-informed and paced manner.

Before any memory processing occurs, time is spent developing resources that support emotional regulation, stability, and safety. This preparation helps ensure that individuals feel adequately supported throughout the therapeutic process.

EMDR therapy may also be integrated with other approaches such as somatic awareness, relational therapy, and reflective dialogue. These approaches can help support emotional processing, integration, and the development of new perspectives over time.

EMDR is a structured therapy, but it is always adapted to the individual’s needs, experiences, and readiness.

Today, this territory remains home to many Indigenous peoples—First Nations, Inuit, and Métis—and we remain grateful to the caregivers of this land.
